When I first created the Kindness In Action Bulletin Board, I did so with the hope that both staff and students would take part in this kindness challenge. Thankfully the bulletin board in my building that I typically use is in a central location so this worked to my benefit. For the Kindness In Action Initiative, staff and students have the opportunity to recognize one another for participating in acts of kindness. Blank Compassion Cards are placed in an envelope and hung on the bulletin board for the taking. Pens and pencils are also hung on the bulletin board for use. After completing the Compassion Cards, the cards are placed in a bucket.
The next few steps were helpful in making this a success:
Gain administrative approval.
Send an email to all staff members about the Kindness In Action Initiative.
Make a school-wide announcement.
Ask your student leaders to help you set up the bulletin board and maintain it.
Use a cute bucket for the Compassion Cards because it makes the activity more fun!
After a few weeks, lots of Compassion Cards were completed! It was heartwarming to read through so many acts of kindness. During our school-wide assembly focused on the character trait of caring, my Character Crusader student leadership group picked Compassion Cards from the bucket to read aloud in front of the entire school. It was a great honor to be selected, but even more special to hear about all of the kind acts being completed!
